Welding Helmets, Shields, Curtains and Fume Extractors: Protecting Everyone in the Workshop

Arc flash burns your eyes in seconds, and you won't feel it until hours later. Welding fume is quieter still, because you feel fine until years down the line.

Both problems have a fix. Most of it is kit you can buy this week.

Welding helmets: what actually matters

A helmet is the one item every welder wears every time, so it deserves the most thought. Browse our welding helmets and you'll notice most are auto-darkening. That means the lens is clear until the arc strikes, then darkens in a fraction of a second.

Shade range and switching speed

Different processes need different shades. TIG at low amps needs a lighter shade than heavy stick welding, so a variable shade range gives you room to adjust. Fast switching speed cuts the flash you catch before the lens darkens, which adds up over a working life.

Optical clarity and viewing size

You can only weld well if you can see well. A clear, distortion-free lens shows the puddle properly. A larger viewing area helps in awkward positions, though a bigger window usually means a heavier helmet.

Comfort is not optional

A helmet that pinches or sits heavy on your neck gets pushed up and left up. Adjustable headgear and balanced weight make the difference between wearing it correctly and wearing it "sometimes".

Keep spares on the shelf

Cover lenses scratch and pit, and replacing them is cheap. We stock lenses and spares alongside helmet-specific spares for popular models, including Parweld XR938H, Parweld XR943H, Stealth 5044 and SWP 3037. If you use 3M gear, there are 3M Speedglas spares and accessories too.

Welding shields: the handheld and the flip-front

Some welders prefer a welding shield they hold or a lighter visor style, particularly for quick tack work or inspection. They're handy when you weld a few seconds here and there and don't want a full helmet on your head. For a full working day, a head-mounted helmet leaves both hands free, and that matters when you're welding.

The welding helmets and shields safety category and the shields and visors page cover related face protection, from grinding visors to clear shields.

Underneath any of these, wear eye protection. Spectacles behind the helmet protect you when you flip it up to chip slag, and that's exactly when a flying chip finds an eye.

Welding curtains: protecting the people next to you

Your helmet protects you. It does nothing for the apprentice at the next bench or the person walking past. Arc flash reaches anyone with line of sight, and bystanders often don't realise they've been hit until their eyes feel like sand.

Welding curtains fix that. Hung around a welding bay, they block the harmful light while letting you keep an eye on things through the tinted material. If you share a workshop or run a training area, they're one of the cheapest ways to reduce risk.

Pair them with welding blankets to protect surfaces and stop sparks igniting nearby material. Sparks travel further than people think.

Choosing the right curtain

Look for flame-resistant material sized to cover the working area, with a tint suited to your process. A curtain on a rail lets you move it as jobs change. Standard workshop layouts vary, so measure the bay before you order.

Fume extractors: the health bit nobody wants to think about

Welding produces fume made of fine metal particles and gases. Breathing it repeatedly can harm your lungs, and welding fume is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as carcinogenic to humans. Stainless steel welding adds concerns around chromium compounds, and galvanised steel releases zinc fume that gives you metal fume fever.

You can't see all of it, and you can't smell your way out of trouble. Extraction is the proper answer.

On-torch and portable extraction

Fume extractors capture fume at or near the source, before it reaches your breathing zone. Portable units suit workshops where you move between jobs. Fixed systems suit permanent welding bays. Either way, the closer the intake sits to the arc, the better it works.

When extraction isn't enough

Some jobs, like confined spaces or heavy stainless work, need respiratory protection as well. Our air respirator systems and air respirators supply clean air to the helmet, and 3M safety equipment includes filters and accessories for Adflo units. Dust masks suit lighter tasks like grinding.

Check current Health and Safety Authority guidance and workplace exposure limits for the materials you weld, since requirements depend on the job and the exposure. If you employ people, a risk assessment isn't optional.

The rest of the kit

Protection doesn't stop at the head. Flame-resistant clothing, gauntlets and boots complete the job. Look at welding gloves, welders boots, welding hats, fire retardant clothing and boiler suits. Skip synthetic fabrics, since they melt onto skin.
